Fast-response sprinkler elements age differently and can lose sensitivity or suffer material degradation over time. When those sprinklers reach about 20 years in service, the practical and safety-focused approach is to either replace them or subject them to testing on a 10-year cycle. This 10-year interval helps ensure they will still perform reliably if needed, rather than risking reduced response or failure due to aging components. Retesting every 5 years is more frequent than typical for these older, aging parts, and waiting until 15 years for replacement or retirement doesn’t provide adequate protection. Retiring all such sprinklers isn’t required if the 10-year testing/replacement cycle is followed, balancing safety with practicality.
